Located just north of the University of Texas, Austin's historic Hyde Park is a popular place for students, faculty and young professionals. Its tree-lined streets and turn-of-the-century buildings mix beauty with convenience - it's also home to many restaurants, coffee shops, and even a shopping center. The official Hyde Park area lies between 38 th Street, 51 st Street, Guadalupe, and Duval Streets.

When Hyde Park was established in 1891, it was known as a "White Only" district. A local entrepreneur built Victorian mansions alongside spacious, yet simple homes for working families. Today, it's one of the most popular neighborhoods in Austin and, you'll still find several of these original homes, some of which have been turned into bed and breakfasts. Since it's a historically rich area, the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association closely monitors home renovations and new construction.

It's one of the city's most densely occupied areas, but it's also known for its friendliness as you stroll through the area, you'll see residents relaxing on their front lawn or chatting at the many coffee shops. One of these well-known coffee spots is Dolce Vita Gelato & Espresso Bar. It boasts dark coffee, delicious gelato flavors, and gourmet sandwiches. Flightpath Coffee House is another Hyde Park favorite. It's one of the city's oldest coffee shops and offers a quiet spot to study and work.

From a quick lunch stop to a gourmet dinner with friends, the neighborhood has a variety of restaurants that will please everyone in your group. Mother's Caf and Garden offers vegan and vegetarian fare including Mexican dishes, sandwiches, breakfast favorites, and even desserts. Hyde Park Bar and Grill is an old favorite for home-cooked meals. And finally, New World Deli is a locally owned deli with gourmet sandwiches and soups, a great spot for a quick lunch with friends.

In addition to these great restaurants, Hyde Park is home to Avenue B Grocery, Fresh Plus Grocery Store and Hyde Park Market. Each have a unique atmosphere and offer fresh, local fare along with meal staples.

If you're looking for recreational opportunities, Hyde Park won't disappoint. Shipe Parke is located in the middle of the district and is the ideal spot for a weekend hangout. It offers a play area and wading pool for the kids, a lap pool, basketball and tennis courts, and even a picnic area.
