Zilker Metropolitan Park, located at 2100 Barton Springs Road, is a must-see Austin spot. The park spans more than 350 acres and is fondly known as "Austin's most loved park." Not only is it home to yearly events, like the Austin City Limits Music Festival, but it also offers plenty recreational opportunities throughout the year. Although many of the activities in the park are free, a parking fee of $3 per car is charged during the busy season mid-March to Labor Day weekend.
On a hot day, be sure to check out the popular Barton Springs pool that makes its home in Zilker Park. The Austin landmark is more than 900 feet long with a natural rock and gravel bottom. Throughout the year, Austin residents swim in the naturally spring-fed, 68-degree water, whether using it for lap swimming or a weekend hangout for a hot, Texas day. Admission to the pool is $3 per adult and $1 per child.
Sports enthusiasts will also enjoy the many opportunities within Zilker Park. Sand volleyball courts, two multi-use fields, and a 9-hole disc golf course are all available within the park. Zilker Hillside Theatre hosts several events throughout the year, ranging from concerts and musicals to plays and dance ensembles. Relax on the hillside with family and friends while enjoy an entertaining musical production.
For a more relaxing afternoon, stroll through Zilker Botanical Gardens. As you explore the 31-acre garden, you'll find diverse topography and unique areas like the Mabel Davis Rose Garden, Hartman Prehistoric Garden, and even a butterfly garden. Admission is free throughout the year.
On the first Sunday in March of each year, Zilker Park hosts a kite festival. Families from all around the area visit the park to fly a kite, enjoy children's games and browse the many vendors in the park that day.
In the winter, the Zilker Tree Holiday Festival takes place in the park. It kicks off with an evening fun run, then is open throughout most of December. Santa's House, nightly entertainment, and a half-mile lighted pedestrian trail are available for families to celebrate the holiday season.
These are just a start to the many activities available throughout the year. Next time you're looking for some outdoor fun in Austin, be sure to check out Zilker Park.
